Jason Shenefield
President/Chief Executive Officer
I’m Jason Shenefield, the president and chief executive officer (CEO) at Phelps Health. My education includes bachelor and master degrees in healthcare management from Southern Illinois University and Capella University, respectively. I am also board certified as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
I often say that healthcare found me. I enlisted in the Navy right out of high school with the idea of eventually becoming a police officer. The Navy, however, had other plans. They placed me as a hospital corpsman, where I worked as a clinic provider and was eventually awarded the Navy achievement medal for my role in a clinic serving nearly 100,000 patients annually. These 5 years in the Navy served as the introduction into my career in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Phelps Health, I worked in leadership roles at healthcare organizations in and around Chicago, Illinois, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. I joined Phelps Health in 2016 as its chief operating officer (COO) and became the CEO in 2021.
As the CEO of Phelps Health, I have the privilege of leading and supporting over 1,900 employees in our shared mission of providing high-quality, accessible healthcare. I enjoy the diversity of challenges and the large number of people we impact on a daily basis.
I was born and raised in southern Iowa, but now reside in rural Rolla, Missouri, with my wife, three children and three dogs. We enjoy spending time together on our small farm, which is also home to a few horses and cattle. In my free time, I like tinkering with vehicles and am currently fixing up my dad’s 1984 Chevy C10, with help from my sons. I also “attempt” to golf and am a Chicago White Sox fan (which is better than being a Cubs fan). Professionally and personally, I believe in the importance of a healthy work-life balance.
We are honored to serve 200,000-plus residents in south-central Missouri.
