Ameer Shams, MD

I’m Ameer Shams, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician with more than 20 years of experience. I care for patients ages 12 and older, treating a variety of conditions, including acute illnesses, annual physicals, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases.

My uncle inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. He was a radiologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia and also provided teleradiology services to Phelps Health, then known as Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Both he and my aunt were major influences in my life. 

While I admired his work, I wanted more direct interaction with patients. Family medicine offers me the opportunity to treat a wide range of conditions while building meaningful connections with patients. I believe the doctor-patient relationship is a partnership. The best outcomes are achieved when we work together.

I chose to join Phelps Health in September 2025 because of its strong reputation as a leader in community health. I was born and raised near Pasadena in Southern California, but have had family ties in this area since childhood. 

In my free time, I enjoy following football and baseball. I’m a big fan of both the Chiefs and the Royals, and attend games when I can.
