The Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center has received accreditation under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

“This is a proud moment for the Center and reflects our entire team’s dedication to safe, compassionate care of the highest quality,” said Bariatric and General Surgeon Donny Roshan, DO. “Their commitment to continuous improvement made this achievement possible.”

“This accreditation will help expand access to care for patients whose insurance plans require treatment at an accredited facility,” Dr. Roshan continued. “It allows us to help more people as they work toward better health and quality of life. Our patients are at the heart of everything we do, and we are honored to support them on their journeys.” ACS and MBSAQIP

MBSAQIP is a nationwide surgical quality program that promotes safe, effective metabolic and bariatric surgery. It evaluates surgical outcomes, including weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea. Research shows that accredited centers have lower complication rates and better patient outcomes than nonaccredited facilities.

“Achieving MBSAQIP accreditation showcases the high quality of care our Weight Loss and Bariatric Center provides,” said Keri Brookshire-Heavin, senior vice president, chief nursing officer and chief operating officer at Phelps Health. “When we brought this service line to the community in 2024, our goal was to meet one of the most critical healthcare challenges facing our area. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to excellence, to our patients and to the health of our region.”

With this accreditation, the Center also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. This designation recognizes hospitals that work to improve surgical care by monitoring their processes and outcomes. It also shows patients that the Center is committed to quality and continuous improvement and has been accredited by the ACS. Patients can trust that the care they receive at Surgical Quality Partner hospitals follows the highest standards in surgical quality.

"ACS Quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience and participation is an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality. As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center has shown a commitment to providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion and dedicating itself to continuous self-improvement," said ACS Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS.
