I’m Rebecca Unger, DO, chief medical officer of Phelps Health Hospital. In this role, I partner with clinical and administrative leaders to support quality, safety and patient-centered care across Hospital services.
I joined the health system in 2012 as an anesthesiologist on the medical staff, and I’ve been privileged to grow with a team dedicated to collaboration and excellence. I look forward to fostering a culture where we accomplish more together than we could alone. I’ve always believed that teamwork strengthens everyone—an idea shaped by years of playing team sports and reinforced in my medical career. In anesthesia, teamwork is essential: when help is needed, you’ll likely see multiple providers working together to ensure the best outcomes. Given the choice of working alone or with others, I will choose a team.
I earned my undergraduate degree from Missouri University of Science and Technology—forever “UMR” to me—in Rolla, Missouri, and my medical degree from Des Moines University in West Des Moines, Iowa. I completed my anesthesia residency at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
I was born at Phelps Health Hospital, raised in Newburg, Missouri, and currently live in St. James, Missouri. My husband and I are proud parents of two children, both born at Phelps Health.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and watching my children compete in their sporting events.
