Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study of disorders affecting a person’s digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, both small and large intestines, pancreas, gall bladder and liver. Physicians who specialize in this field of medicine are sometimes referred to as gastroenterologists.

  • Pancreatitis – occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed or damaged
  • Gallbladder and biliary disease – affects gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Inflammatory bowel disease – occurs when intestines become inflamed; examples include Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
