Phelps Health will open the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center in Rolla this coming September. The center will be led by Donald “Donny” Roshan, DO, an experienced general and bariatric surgeon. Dr. Roshan, a Rolla native and a graduate of Missouri S&T, is bringing his expertise back to his hometown community.

“Returning to Rolla to lead the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center is a dream come true,” said Dr. Roshan. “I am passionate about helping people in our community achieve their health goals and improve their quality of life. Our team is dedicated to providing compassionate, comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.”

The new center will be located at 1201 Hauck Drive near Forum and 10th Street where the Phelps Health Medical Group – Bass Clinic is currently operating. Family Medicine Physician James Bass, MD, will retire at the end of August 2024 after more than 40 years of distinguished service to the region. The space will undergo renovations to accommodate the needs of the Weight Loss and Bariatric Center. In the interim, Dr. Roshan will meet with patients on the second floor of the Phelps Health Delbert Day Cancer Institute in General Surgery to ensure that care is available without interruption.

The Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center will open at a critical time. Over 37% of adults in Missouri are classified as obese, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ 2024 State Health Assessment. Missouri ranks 16th nationally for the highest rate of adult obesity in the US. Phelps Health’s latest Community Health Needs Assessment revealed that obesity is a growing concern across all six counties served by the health system. Obesity is linked to various health issues, including heart disease, the leading cause of death in Missouri. Obesity contributes to high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, cancer and increased diabetes rates.

The Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center will offer a comprehensive range of services to help people lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. The center will feature surgical and nonsurgical weight loss solutions, personalized nutritional counseling, and ongoing support to help patients achieve and maintain their weight loss goals. Bariatric surgical options will include gastric bypass and gastric sleeve procedures, including the laparoscopic minimally invasive SADI-S gastric surgery.

The center is dedicated to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, using the latest advancements in bariatric medicine.

“We’re thrilled to open the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center, which will greatly improve our patients' quality of life,” said Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer Keri Brookshire-Heavin. “This center supports our mission to provide high-quality, accessible healthcare. By offering personalized weight loss options, we're helping our patients take charge of their health and ultimately live healthier lives.”

Dr. Roshan earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Missouri S&T, graduated from A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, and completed his residency at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. He has extensive experience in performing advanced bariatric procedures. His commitment to patient care and his innovative approach to weight loss have earned him patients' respect.

"I am excited to help our community become healthier and achieve their wellness goals, knowing that we are here to support them every step of the way,” said Dr. Roshan. "We understand that every patient's journey is unique, and we are committed to providing personalized care and guidance.”
