Three Things to Know

  • Phelps Health earned four American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® achievement awards for excellence in heart and stroke care, following the latest evidence-based treatment standards.
  • These recognitions reflect the health system’s effort to go beyond better, improving patient outcomes, reducing readmissions and saving lives in south-central Missouri.
  • Phelps Health also holds Primary Heart Attack Center Certification, underscoring its commitment to delivering timely, high-quality cardiac care.

Phelps Health has received four American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® achievement awards for its dedication to following the most up-to-date, research-based treatment guidelines for heart disease and stroke. These awards reflect Phelps Health’s commitment to saving lives, reducing hospital readmissions and helping patients recover more quickly.

“Phelps Health is committed to improving care by using the latest treatment guidelines and streamlining processes to ensure timely care for heart attacks and strokes,” said Phelps Health Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer Keri Brookshire-Heavin. “The Get With The Guidelines program makes it easier for our teams to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients, helping more people in south-central Missouri live longer, healthier lives. These achievements reflect our ongoing effort to go beyond better in the care we provide every day.”

Heart disease and stroke remain the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, according to the Association’s 2025 Statistical Update. Research shows that patients have better outcomes when healthcare providers consistently follow proven treatment guidelines.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, ensuring that patient care aligns with the latest evidence-based standards. By participating in this program, Phelps Health continues to improve outcomes for patients across the region.

This year, Phelps Health received the following achievement awards:

  • Get With The Guidelines® - Rural Heart Failure Silver
  • Get With The Guidelines® - Rural Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Silver
  • Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Silver, with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll
  • Get With The Guidelines® - Rural Stroke Bronze

“These awards show Phelps Health's commitment to caring for those in their community who need cardiovascular care,” said Donald Lloyd-Jones, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and current volunteer chair of the Association’s Quality Oversight Committee. “By following the American Heart Association’s quality improvement protocols, Phelps Health can help realize our shared vision of improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates — a win for health care systems, families and communities.”

In April, Phelps Health also earned the Heart Association and The Joint Commission’s Primary Heart Attack Center (PHAC) Certification. This distinction recognizes the health system’s commitment to delivering high-quality, lifesaving cardiac care.

By participating in this program, Phelps Health continues to improve outcomes for patients across the region — an example of how the health system strives to go beyond better for its patients, families and communities.
