Custom Earmolds and Earplugs

Some hearing aids require custom-made earmolds that connect to the hearing aid behind your ear. Other hearing aids fit entirely inside your ear. In both cases, the audiologist will take an impression of your ear canal. They’ll place a cotton ball in your ear, then insert it to a specific depth. Next, they’ll fill your ear with silicone, which hardens in about 4 minutes. Once the impression is taken, it will be sent to the manufacturer to create your earmolds.

Impressions are also used for:

  • Custom swim plugs
  • Custom hearing protection for noise exposure (e.g., from gunfire, heavy equipment or lawn care)
  • Custom sleep plugs for people bothered by snoring
  • Custom filtered sound plugs for musicians to protect their hearing from amplified instruments
