About Me
My name is Gregory Maynard, DO, and I’m a board-certified family medicine physician. I joined Phelps Health—St. James in July 2026 and treat patients of all ages for a wide range of conditions, including acute illnesses and chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure, COPD and diabetes. I also provide routine physicals, wellness exams and preventive care, in addition to performing in-office procedures such as biopsies, joint injections and skin lesion removal.
My interest in medicine was sparked when I was 14 by a science teacher who was a former Navy medic. He incorporated medical scenarios and concepts into his lessons, and from then on, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine.
When I started medical school, I envisioned a surgical career. However, during my third- and fourth-year clinical rotations here at Phelps Health, I realized my passion was in family medicine, where I could build lasting relationships with patients and help them stay healthy through preventive care and overall wellness. One of the physicians who had the greatest impact on me was Dr. Ed Bruns, a Phelps Health Hall of Fame Physician. His rotation challenged me the most, but it also showed me the impact a physician can have through meaningful conversations and patient connections. I strive to emulate Dr. Bruns’ approach by using relatable analogies to help patients better understand their conditions and take an active role in their health.
I also discovered that I really enjoyed the Rolla area. I was born and raised in southeast Kansas, so I've always felt a strong connection to rural communities. My wife, who was my high school sweetheart, and I have called Rolla home since the mid-1990s, raising three children here.
I’ve also stayed involved with Phelps Health, serving as medical director of the Hospice program for more than 20 years. Seeing patients in the clinic gives me a chance to get to know them and build a solid working relationship. Simply listening is the most impactful thing I can do as a physician. When that connection is established, patients feel respected as individuals and understand that I have their best interests at heart.
Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the natural beauty of the Ozarks. Whether I'm hunting, fishing, trail running or spending time with my family and our two dogs, being active outdoors helps me clear my mind and recharge.
