About Me
I’m Sylvester T. Youlo, MD, MBA, MHA, FAAOS, FAAHKS, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who joined Phelps Health in 2020. I specialize in joint preservation, sports injuries, arthritis care, fracture management and general orthopedic conditions. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (FAAHKS), and offer advanced treatment options that focus on faster recovery, less tissue disruption and long-term joint function.
My areas of clinical expertise include:
- Anterior hip replacement using a muscle- and tendon-sparing approach to promote quicker recovery and improved long-term function
- Partial knee replacement, offering targeted treatment with less trauma and faster rehabilitation
- Arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, including ligament, tendon, cartilage and meniscus repair
- Fracture care and treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries in children and adults
- Arthritis management, providing strategies to preserve joint function and reduce pain
I’m deeply committed to educating my patients and building collaborative relationships. I take the time to explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly, enabling each patient to make informed care decisions that align with their lifestyle and goals. My advanced techniques ensure quicker recovery, reduced pain and improved mobility for patients. This approach allows my patients to return to their daily activities with confidence.
In addition to my clinical practice, I hold Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Health Administration (MHA) degrees, bringing a unique perspective to patient-centered care. My dual expertise in clinical medicine and healthcare delivery enables me to provide efficient, effective and compassionate patient care.

Great team!
Excellent service!
Dr Youlo was wonderful, excellent bedside manner. He made me feel very comfortable and listened to what I had to say. He explained my problem to me in detail which I appreciated. He gave me a steroid injection in the joint and I was very anxious about it, but he explained step by step what I would feel and put me at ease. It actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting. By the way, he's definitely not pushing surgery and that was an A+ for me. I would highly recommend him to any one needing his orthopedic expertise. Thank you Dr Youlo.
I didn't have a lot of interaction with any doctor or staff. I looked up the exercises online, although the doctor did tell me to do circles with my arm. I did feel comfortable with the radiologist, very thorough kind and a blessing to speak to. Also had good communication with the doctor. But I only was in the clinic three times. I liked it that the doctor gave me a copy of the X-rays, how it healed.
Everyone was very nice and I felt my concerns was heard.

Everything was done up to standard, and as far as I could tell, with the exception of I was supposed to get some kind of shower aid so I could get in the shower and take a shower, and I haven't got anything yet. Nobody's done anything to follow up with me. I tried to follow up earlier today, and I have gotten a response back from you guys. I would like to get a shower and get clean, and I need some help because I can't stand up in a shower with a broken hip. Thank you.
Everything was fast n thorough didn't wait long,Everything was clean everyone is nice,I'm just concerned about why my legs are like jello can't barely walk

Dr. Youlo has always treated me with kindness and respect. He listens and gives great injections!!! I will always keep Dr.Youlo as my ortho doc and tell others about him.
We were misinterpreted on our appointment and they scheduled us for the Waynesville office, which was kind of an inconvenience, and then we had to wait longer, of course, but they did finally see us.
Dr. Youlo was great. The front office staff was also great. Very good experience. I mean, a great experience overall. Very pleased, very happy that he's my doctor. That's all I have to add.

From the the xray technician who was kind funny and careful and in to the physicians office who is very intelligent soft spoken but precise in explaining everything to my husband and I. The check in online service says if I don't have anything to give to the staff I DO NOT have to check in at the desk. I waited 20 minutes past my appointment time, approached the desk and they said I wasn't called because I didn't check in at the desk. Then argued with me and implied I wasn't being truthful!!!
Seemed like the provider cared more about his chewing gum than he did for his patient.
Doctor gave me an injection in the hip and it didn't hurt at all. Very good !
Everything when well
The wait time for my appointment was way past my appointment time. I was told that the X-ray tech was late getting in and my appointment pushed back 30 minutes.
Provider doesn't complete an assessment for what your there to be seen for. He comes in with his mind already made up what he wants to do before ever seeing you. Could careless what issue you have and pushes his work to the next doctor by a referral. His notes are not accurate! He is terrible all around. Would not recommend.

Dr Youlo is not only a good physician, he is also a really nice, kind man. I trust him totally. His nurse was very nice also. She was friendly and polite. Being elderly, you aren't treated with kindness and respect all the time, so it's very nice to go where you are treated so good.
My provider was a wonderful doctor, and am so glad he did my surgery, I already have so much relief. This was a long road to get to ( over Seven months after injury), which I blame the fort Leonard Wood health care system solely on. Phelps Medical care system has always given me excellent care! Thanks to all the staff that work there!

I loved the doctor but many times I couldn't understand him. Staff were very sweet.
I think the dr that I saw was great a listen to everything I said.im just worried about my now .its making me sick N i feel like I should be admitted into the for all the test I need .my whole leg is hurting N now my left knee is bothering me as well N my legs hurt .its very uncomfortable.
Excellent experience. All went well from Dr Youlo to the entire staff. Therapy was perfect. Almost a delight. So nice and courteous and they knew what they doing and what I needed. This experience could not have gone better. ?

Dr. Youlo saw that I wasn't feeling well and quickly transitioned from my knee to getting me a prescription for my fever and ailments.
not much can be done to improve services
My only suggestion is on the eval that you call me and have me do, don't over explain it. You explain the answers for every single question and it gets repetitive.
The Dr. explained so that I could understand. I would recommend him to everyone.
You could have offered more compassion after removing a cast that had been on there so tight that you can't even move your skin or anything instead of twisting your arm. I did not appreciate that. It was like it didn't make a difference.

Oh, we had good customers support and service. Everybody over there knew what was going on and knew how to handle insurance. I had questions on the paperwork. They helped me with that. And it was pretty seamless. I didn't, you know, there's the things I didn't know about, they helped me with. So got it all done without too much hubbub.

Dr Youlo is kind, gentle, compassionate, and always willing to explain and answer any questions or concerns. I feel like he really cares about his patients and it's not just the money. Rolla needs more doctors like him!
Well, the doctor was very knowledgeable and the staff, but he told me the things that I should hear that in his honest opinion about my wrist and my hands. So he did a very good job.
The provider took the time to make my autistic child comfortable and talked to him like he was a normal person. He made him happy and he enjoyed the visit.

This was the first time seeing Dr. Youlo. I felt very comfortable with talking to him. He answered all my questions and put my mind at ease concerning my problem. I would recommend him to anyone who wants a straightforward answer .
He did not explain it, thanks to me. He just saw a little bit of my arm, not very much of it, right at the bottom of it. And I had opened my slouch up and buttoned it so that he could see it. And he said, yes, you know, that he would. And but he never even looked. I thought he was coming back in the room. He was only in there just a few minutes. And I mean, a few minutes, like five minutes. So no, I was not satisfied.

Staff were all very supportive, & assisted me when I could barely ambulate during two clinic visits.
Waited over an hour to see doctor , for him to be in & out in under 10 minutes. He came in thinking I had a broken arm, so I know he never even looked at my X-rays. Then asked me why I was there. After squeezing my bicep ordered steroids and left. Not impressed so far, will see doc for next appointment will see how it goes.

Dr Youlo Orthopedic Doctor did not listen to us. He referred my husband to a personal trainer instead of physical therapy like the VA wanted him to. We are not asking for knee surgery unless that is what my husband needs. We will not be back to see him.

Dr. Youlo starts with a handshake and a smile. Very personable and you can tell by the questions, he's not only knowledgeable diagnosing your problem, but there is a scene of concern in his voice. I truly trust Dr. Youlo over all others I've worked with in Phelps Health.
The ladies at the desk for checking in we're very polite and kind, my x-ray technician she was absolutely wonderful. After waiting over 2 hours to see Dr Youlo he spoke with me for 5 minutes pretty much told me all the things he doesn't do did not listen to many of my questions and to most of the questions he just kept saying I don't do that so as far as Phelps health your staff is wonderful. But I will never ever have anything good to say about Dr Youlo I guess he is only there on Fridays and pretty much moves people in and out like cattle he was of no help to me whatsoever. However his nurse was very kind but needs a little bit more education when it comes to medications their names and what they are for. Sorry doctor Youlo but it is very obvious from your demeanor to what you say that you really don't care about your patients and that's very tragic.
