Zak Maedgen, MMS, PA-C

I’m Zak Maedgen, MMS, PA-C, a board-certified physician assistant who joined the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center in April 2025. I collaborate with Phelps Health General and Bariatric Surgeon Donny Roshan, DO, and see patients in the clinic for medically supervised weight loss and general surgery needs. I also assist in the operating room during procedures.

I’ve been part of the Phelps Health team since 2015, starting as a scribe in the Emergency Department (ED) and later serving as an emergency medical technician (EMT) with Ambulance Services. After becoming a physician assistant, I returned to the ED for 2 years before moving to my current role. 

My interest in medicine began early. When I was young, my father passed away from health issues. I wanted to understand why and help others make healthy choices. The Weight Loss and Bariatric Center gives me the opportunity to do this. It’s rewarding to be a part of a patient’s journey to better health, from initial consultations to skin removal surgeries.

I have down-to-earth conversations with my patients, so they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, questions and concerns. My goal is for them to feel included in their healthcare decisions and supported throughout their care.

I was born and raised in Rolla, graduating from Rolla High School and Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). I’ve known Dr. Roshan since childhood, and we went to high school and college together. Now, I’m proud to be working with him to bring life-changing treatments and options to our community.

My wife also works at Phelps Health, and we’ve even had the opportunity to work together in the ED. Outside of work, we enjoy spending time with our son, being outdoors and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. Another one of my hobbies is land management, including food plots, timber work and prescribed burns.
