Theodore Scott Gossett was the first baby born at Phelps Health in Rolla in 2026, arriving at 12:53 PM on January 2. He weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and measured 19 inches long.

New parents Laurie and Drew Gossett, of Rolla, welcomed Theodore into the world.

“We always knew he’d be special to us no matter what day he arrived,” Laurie said. “But to have the first baby of the year and share the excitement with the floor was an unexpected bonus.”

As in previous years, the first baby of the new year received gifts to celebrate the event. Thanks to the Phelps Health Foundation and the Obstetrics and Nursery Department, the family went home with a Radio Flyer wagon stuffed full of goodies, including a pack and play, sound machine, nursing pillow, diapers and wipes, books and more.

On behalf of the Obstetrics and Nursery Department, Director Stephanie Welch, BSN, RN, extended thanks to the Foundation.

“Welcoming the first baby of the year is always a highlight for our team,” she said. “The Foundation’s support helps us celebrate this exciting milestone and provide a little extra support to the family as they head home.”

Phelps Health Obstetrician and Gynecologist Kelsey Knobbe, MD, delivered the baby boy.

“I’d 110% recommend having your baby at Phelps Health,” added the new mom. “We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

In 2025, the health system delivered 698 babies (364 boys and 334 girls).
