About Me

I’m Sarah McKee, FNP-BC, CNM, APRN, and I joined Phelps Health as a certified nurse midwife in February 2024. I see women (teens through menopause), and my collaborating physician is Phelps Health Obstetrician and Gynecologist Wes Harden, MD, FACOG.

I perform annual exams, and see patients for pregnancy, birth control counseling, menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms, preconception and well-woman care. I also help women with long-acting, reversible birth control methods, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and etonogestrel birth control implants. I can perform vulvar and endometrial biopsies to help diagnose conditions.

Special interests of mine include polycystic ovary syndrome (or PCOS, a hormonal disorder), providing trauma-informed care, natural childbirth and a holistic and functional approach to medicine (using a whole-body approach). I can help women in pregnancy and to labor naturally through specific body mechanics, should they desire.

From an early age, I wanted to work in medicine. Prior to becoming a nurse midwife, I was a labor and delivery nurse for 6 years. Later, I cared for patients as a family nurse practitioner, focusing on pediatrics and women’s health for over 15 years.

While attending nursing school and later working alongside many great midwives, I became passionate about serving women in a greater capacity. I pursued midwifery to empower women through shared decision making to be more involved with their healthcare.

I chose to practice at Phelps Health to serve women in my own community. I’m also excited to work with several familiar faces, as I previously was a labor and delivery nurse with the organization from 2006-2008.

I grew up in the Metro East of Illinois, but my family and I now consider St. James our home. My wonderful husband and I were high school sweethearts and have been married for over 20 years. Two children complete our family.

In my spare time, I love baking and spending time with my family outdoors, running, hiking and fishing. One fun fact about me: I grew up playing the violin and am now teaching myself to play the cello.

My only feedback is that I wish the doctor introduced her medical assistant without me making a comment about it, I didn't know who else was going to be seeing me naked. Felt a little nervous.

No stirrups is great. Not necessary. Usually so scared but was not bad.
