About Me

I’m Thomas Guerrero-Garcia, MD, a medical oncologist/hematologist who joined Phelps Health in 2019. I see and treat adult patients (ages 18 and up) for different types of cancer, including but not limited to, breast, colon, lung, prostate, head and neck, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma and leukemia/lymphoma. I also treat patients for benign (noncancerous) blood diseases. My collaborating provider is advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner Becky Witham.

In high school, I found myself enjoying and doing well in biology and anatomy. I went on to pre-med, where I was inspired by my biochemistry professor.

As I progressed through medical school, I became interested in oncology, the branch of medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and study of cancer. I had completed an internship at the University of Miami and was intrigued after spending months with an oncology attending physician in the outpatient center. I then spent years training in blood cancers and cancers throughout the body in Boston, Massachusetts.

At the Phelps Health Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI), I’m inspired by my coworkers. We truly love what we do, and I believe it shows. As a provider, I make it a point to listen and capture the key information from my patients.

I'm originally from Ecuador, South America, but now live in Rolla with my wife and children. I love dogs, reading and staying active outdoors. Soccer and tennis are my favorite sports. I am fluent in English and Spanish.

I also offer telehealth visits, which allow patients to visit with me remotely using a smartphone, tablet or computer with an internet connection and audio-video capabilities.

I don't like going to hospitals but Phelps has made my appointments around my schedule and they're always so quick to get you in and the doctor explains everything 100% so you understand what's going on and the nurses and the staff that checks you in are very professional I would recommend Phillips to anybody and everybody I know.

Dr. Garcia took time to explain all my options, his ideas and thoughts on my various conditions but most of all he treated me with dignity, compassion and most of all like a long lost friend. He was very very professional but was able to also treat me as a human not just another patient. I didn't have a medical record number stamped to my forehead for identification I actually got to be me. He encouraged me to ask those "stupid" questions we all fear asking.

Corrected things that needed to be corrected in my chart. Listened to me and explained the treatment plan so that everything was understood and clear.

The only thing I can think of that could have been differently was when I showed up to register at the Siteman Center for my appointment they told me at that time my insurance was not active. I knew it was but I had to wait to go back to a room until they called and verified that it was in fact active. Something like this could have been handled before my appointment to make my first oncology appointment a little more pleasant. This was just a minor inconvenience and I felt everyone was so kind. The doctor and nurses were amazing. I had labs drawn that day and I was stuck multiple times at Barnes because I have terrible veins. He got me on the first stick!

The staff and Dr. Guerrero went above and beyond to make our visit as enlightening and pleasant as it could be considering the circumstances. Everyone was pleasant and very compassionate and understanding. We would definitely recommend Dr. Guerrero and his staff to anyone who might be looking for a cancer doctor.

Receptionist had a patient and told me to sign in and wait. When she finished with that patient, she ignored me. Then another patient arrived and the receptionist processed her, continuing to ignore me. A second receptionist appeared and ignored me until I approached her and asked to be processed in....which she did.
