About Me

I’m Kan Huang, MD, PhD, MS, a medical oncologist/hematologist with Phelps Health. I joined the organization in 2019 and am board-certified in internal medicine, oncology and hematology. I am highly trained to treat adult patients for all types of cancer, with special interests in lung, gastrointestinal (GI), skin and breast cancer. My collaborating providers are advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner Becky Witham and certified family nurse practitioner Logan Shockley.

I was born and raised in southern China but came to the US with my brother who lost his vision at age 17. His vision was eventually restored, thanks to a wonderful eye doctor in West Virginia. This experience motivated me to pursue a career in the medical field. My immediate family members also worked in the medical field, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. During my residency, my mentor was the president of the American Cancer Society in New York. She made a lasting impression on me, and I dedicated myself to fighting cancer as a result. My research background also lends itself to understanding and implementing new cancer treatments.

As a medical oncologist/hematologist, taking the time to get to know my patients is important to me. I spend a solid hour with new patients, and I meet their families. I take a personalized approach. At the Phelps Health Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI), we provide comprehensive cancer care. We ensure a patient’s different needs – transportation, for example – are met. Our oncology team works together to make certain we are on the same page when treating our patients.

I chose Phelps Health for a couple of reasons. I love the friendly, family-oriented community in Rolla. I also desired to work with a passionate and gifted team and have found that here at the DDCI.

I am married with two boys and love to be active outside of work. My hobbies include Zumba, swimming, yoga and exploring the outdoors with my boys. I also enjoy cooking and traveling, especially to the mountains. I am fluent in English and Chinese.

Everyone was so nice an made me feel very comfortable, a call from someone would have made me feel better but I know that is something you don't do! Thank you for being so caring!

Ladies at reception were so very sweet. There was a mishap, but it was all innocent. They were great.
