Phelps Health is undergoing a significant transformation, one that is evident to those who have visited recently. The changes are not just cosmetic—they reflect a meaningful shift in the way the organization approaches care. From modernized facilities to an improved patient experience, Phelps Health is redefining what it means to be a healthcare leader in a rural community.

“Phelps Health is not just striving to provide high-quality care, but to reimagine what it means to be a leader in rural healthcare,” said Jason Shenefield, president and CEO of Phelps Health. “The health system’s focus is on improving care for every patient, every time, which drives every aspect of our team’s work.”
A Commitment to Transformation
Phelps Health’s transformation is driven by key initiatives, such as the launch of the Phelps Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Center, which helps patients achieve lasting success by offering compassionate, long-term support. The Delbert Day Cancer Institute has become a central hub for comprehensive cancer care, further strengthened by a partnership with the Siteman Cancer Network. This partnership connects local patients to cutting-edge treatments, clinical trials and second opinions at one of the nation’s top cancer centers.
In addition to these advancements, Phelps Health recently achieved Primary Heart Attack Center certification—a national recognition from the American Heart Association and The Joint Commission. This certification highlights Phelps Health’s commitment to delivering exceptional cardiac care.

“We’re incredibly proud of this certification, which demonstrates the dedication of our entire cardiac team,” said Keri Brookshire-Heavin, senior vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer at Phelps Health. “This recognition reflects our ability to provide timely, lifesaving care when it’s needed most.”
Growth With Purpose
Founded in 1951, Phelps Health has grown from a community hospital with 63 beds to a modern healthcare system with 240 beds and 2,000 employees. Serving more than 200,000 people in south-central Missouri, Phelps Health remains committed to improving the health of the community.
“This transformation isn’t about growing in size—it’s about getting better every day,” said Shenefield. “Phelps Health is focused on becoming more responsive, more human and more attuned to the needs of the communities it serves.”
Phelps Health’s progress is reflected in a recent third-party survey, which revealed an over 20-point increase in community trust in just 2 years. This dramatic shift reflects the tangible impact the transformation is having on the community.
Better Every Day

Phelps Health has made significant strides in modernizing patient care. Tools like MyChart allow patients to schedule appointments, communicate with providers and access their health information remotely, enhancing the overall care experience. Additionally, improvements in communication and follow-up have led to the highest patient satisfaction scores ever recorded at the health system.
“We are more than just healthcare providers; we are advocates for our patients,” Shenefield said. “The team is committed to solving problems and working together to create a supportive, responsive care environment.”
Beyond the Hospital Walls
Phelps Health’s commitment to community health extends beyond the walls of its Hospital. Through a partnership with The Centre in Rolla, Phelps Health has introduced the MyFitRx® medical fitness program, which provides low-cost recovery options for patients.

The organization also offers community cancer screenings, health education and support for healthcare issues such as nutrition, mental health and transportation to access care.
“We know that true health happens in the communities where people live, work and play—not just in doctors' offices and hospitals,” said Shenefield.
Leading on a Larger Scale
Phelps Health is also stepping up as a leader in healthcare at both the state and national levels. Shenefield serves on the Missouri Hospital Association Board of Trustees and the American Hospital Association’s Regional Policy Board, ensuring that the voices of rural communities are heard and influencing healthcare policy.
Going Beyond Better
“At Phelps Health, the goal is not only to deliver care but to transform what it means to care,” said Shenefield. “Every service, every patient interaction, reflects our commitment to going beyond better. This is not just a campaign—it’s a promise to provide consistent, intentional, compassionate care.”
Phelps Health’s transformation is just getting started, and the health system looks forward to continuing its journey of growth and improvement.
